Xtreme Garden Makeover
2009-10 Xtreme Garden Makeover - Our Community Spaces

Download Form Here!
For our third garden "giveaway", we have decided to help improve a public area that is an important resource to our Northwoods way of life, and has a landscape component that we can help improve. Once again, Pat Anderson of Integrity Landscaping has agreed to partner with us in pulling this off. He was our landscaper team member with the first makeover that we did. For information on past projects, see our reports below.

For this cycle, we are looking for entries from such entities as public parks, government building sites, non-profit facilities and community gardens in the Northwoods area. School projects definitely qualify. Potential projects will not be eliminated if they charge user fees, but we will look closely at the nature of any fees charged. Things supported by groups of businesses (through, for instance, a chamber of commerce) could also be considered.

The nature of the work could include grading and tree planting, or perennial bed development, or a native plant teaching garden. It could be any number of things as long as it benefits the community substantially. For this makeover, we will accept requests for consideration in writing through June 20, 2009, with the winner to be hopefully announced on the 4th of July. The project should be located within 50 miles of our nursery although we would consider more distant locations of special merit.

The total value of the projects is generally limited to $5,000; however, we will gladly look at projects of a somewhat more modest scope this time around. We will plan to finish the selected project in 2009 or 2010. We can possibly amplify the results by working with community volunteers that may be interested in that particular public facility.

Request consideration letters should be submitted by someone responsible for the management of the facility, or by someone who has received approval to solicit this aid from a responsible party. Letters should indicate the identity and status of the applicant and the exact location of the potential work site. The letter can include pictures and must indicate the public uses of the facility (or potentially, the future uses). Most of all, the applicant must make a sound case for the merit of the project. Letters of application should cover the basics, but do not need to be overly lengthy. However, they should complete enough to lay out the situation and how we can improve it for all the citizens of the area.

Please submit any proposal to us by mail, fax, or through our website email function, indicating it is for the Xtreme Garden Makeover - Our Community Spaces project. Hanson's Garden Village and Integrity Landscaping reserve the right to reject any and all applications. Letters of application are due, in our office, by June 20, 2009.

Before Makeover
2006 Xtreme Garden MakeOver was a huge success. Kathy Meronek, of Sugar Camp, was the selected winner (out of over 50 very good entries). With the "Xtreme" assistance of Pat Anderson and Integrity Landscaping, LLC, Kathy now has a beautiful and functional back yard area including trees, shrubs, perennials and other flowers and a brick patio sitting area from which to enjoy the whole thing. Kathy's home is on the site of the old 'Tamarack School' which served the 'South Sugar Camp' area. The value of her backyard landscape approached $5,000.00.

Work being done
There was a lot of community interest in this project, which received good media coverage. More importantly, between Hanson's and Integrity Landscaping, we were able to help out a deserving gardener. We at Hanson's Garden Village were so thrilled with the results of this project, that we are now announcing a new Xtreme Garden MakeOver for 2007.

2007 XTREME GARDEN MAKEOVER - 'Save Our Lakes and Streams'. The winner, who is the private owner of a "problem" shoreline, and who is commited to improving water quality, plant and animal diversity, and a return to a more natural Northwoods look, will be chosen by a selection committee from entries submitted by July 1, 2007. Installation will be effected in the Fall of 2007, or during the 2008 growing season. We will again be partnering with a qualified landscape installation company, as we did so successfully with the last Xtreme Garden MakeOver.

Work being done
One deserving natural landscape project will receive the following values:
  • From: Hanson's Garden Village, LLC, Rhinelander a minimum of $ 2,000.00 value in plants, materials, and design services
  • From: Outdoor Rooms, Inc., of Rhinelander a minimum of $ 2,000.00 value in installation services and materials

Work being done
We will also incorporate the services of the appropriate county Land and Water Conservation Department. We encourage any entries from Oneida, Vilas, Forest, Florence, and Langlade Counties. In addition we will happily consider entries from southern Iron, eastern Price, and northern Lincoln counties.
DO NOT wait to see if you are selected to take care of immediate erosion or environmental problems - this process will take too much time for that.
DO NOT apply if you are under court order, or under instructions from the DNR, EPA, or a county zoning authority to mitigate or apply erosion practices. Projects already receiving public cost-sharing dollars will receive a lower scoring in our evaluation. If your project requires the services of a civil or other engineer, you will be responsible for obtaining that part of the project inputs. The owner will be responsible for any required permits (which we can help obtain).

Work being done
PLEASE stop by at Hanson's during business hours to receive the entry form, or PRINT it off of this website by clicking the link below. For this contest, we are primarily interested in aiding a riparian owner who is interested and needs help in a planting alone; or planting with 'soft' engineering practices (e.g. biolog, erosion blankets). A premium will be given to situations where this project will re-connect wildlife corridors, slow or stop runoff, and/or provide a good example on an over-developed shoreline.
WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD to reviewing your submitted projects. Initial screening will be based upon your information and submitted pictures. The finalists will receive a site visit from someone on the selection committee.
